Statement from Senator Jim Risch on Steve Appleton

The passing of my good friend Steve Appleton has shocked and saddened our entire family.  He was a talented and tireless worker who made Micron one of the biggest success stories of our time.  He represented the best of our free market economy.  Steve was an outstanding business leader and very generous to so many causes.  He was always quick to make a personal call when significant events affected Micron or our mutual interests.  Recently, we worked together closely on patent reform legislation.  We also talked often about his love of flying and what was new in that part of his life.  Vicki and I send our heartfelt condolences to the Appleton family.  Steve will be greatly missed. A month ago, we joked when we said that for Obama to get the unemployment rate to negative by election time, all he has to do is to crush the labor force participation rate to about 55%. Looks like the good folks at the BLS heard us: it appears that the people not in the labor force exploded by an unprecedented record 1.2 million. No, that's not a typo: Read more...

Do Government Programs Ever 'Fail'

By Austin Hill

“Too big to fail.”

Americans have come to loath the idea that some business enterprises are so important and so “big,” that they can’t be allowed to fail - especially as it regards large corporations that “need” government bailouts.  But have we developed a similar disdain for government programs that are treated as though they can’t possibly be failures?

Op/Ed: Idaho GOP Chairman Norm Semanko: Setting the Record Straight

Opinion Piece Submitted by Chairman Norm Semanko

A lot of false information has been presented in the media regarding my desire to remove my previous appointee from the Redistricting Commission. It has been suggested that this is an attempt by right-wing extremists to control the Party and the State. Even wilder speculation has suggested that Republicans are in danger of losing their majority status. Let me set the record straight with a few facts.

Idaho Republican Presidential Nomination Caucus

By ICB

I have been asked about the upcoming Caucus and how it works so I will attempt to answer some questions about why and how the caucus will work. Thanks to Idaho Republican Party Executive Director Jonathan Parker for providing me with this information.

First of all, Idaho has 32 delegates to send to the national convention. That is more delegates than Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada.

Victor Davis Hanson: The un-Obama

Barack Obama's favorability in the polls falls when he is himself -- overexposed, hard left in his press conferences, and boastful about legislative achievements like Obamacare and a stimulus of more than $1 trillion.

Then a strange thing happened. Obama largely went quiet. Often he was out of sight, vacationing in Hawaii or golfing. It was almost as if he learned that the less he was seen or heard, the more Americans liked the idea of Obama as president rather the reality of his constant "Make no mistake about it" and "Let me be perfectly clear" sermonizing.

Larry Elder: Democrats Love Taxes -- They Just Don't Want to Pay Them

Forgive Republican candidate Mitt Romney for his alleged failure to adequately explain why he paid "only" 14 percent of his income in taxes.

The honest answer -- "Well, because my accountants couldn't figure out how to get them any lower" -- does not work in this or very many other election years. Romney seemed flat-footed because, like most business people, he seeks to minimize costs and expenses.

This includes taxes.

Ed Morrissey: Should Holder walk the plank for Fast & Furious, or be pushed?

To call Eric Holder’s performance yesterday at the House Oversight Committee hearing unimpressive is to turn understatement into a kind of art form.  The Washington Examiner called it “petulant, angry, and defiant,” and Holder more concerned about how Congress treats him than the hundreds of dead bodies strewn about Mexico and the US from weapons provided to drug cartels by his own ATF.  It reached its nadir during this exchange with Rep. Raul Labrador:

Holder’s attitude before the committee yesterday could only be described as contemptuous.

Walter E. Williams: Obama's Racial Politics

There's been a heap of criticism placed upon President Barack Obama's domestic policies that have promoted government intrusion and prolonged our fiscal crisis and his foreign policies that have emboldened our enemies. Any criticism of Obama pales in comparison with what might be said about the American people who voted him in to the nation's highest office.

Obama's presidency represents the first time in our history that a person could have been elected to that office who had long-standing close associations with people who hate our nation. I'm speaking of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor for 20 years, who preached that blacks should sing not "God Bless America," but "God damn America."
